Emergency Dental Care FAQs

Severe tooth pain, broken and chipped teeth, a knock-out tooth, swelling of the mouth, excessive bleeding, and dental infections are considered dental emergencies. Timely assessment and prompt emergency treatment prevent the spread of oral infection, permanent tooth loss, and pernicious damage. If you have a dental emergency, it is important to call an emergency dentist as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, emergency rooms do not treat tooth problems, repair teeth, or pull teeth because ER physicians are not trained in dentistry. That said, your local urgent care or ER can give you antibiotics or pain relievers to alleviate oral pain and swelling while you wait to see your dentist.

If you need immediate emergency dental care in San Diego, schedule an appointment with Fifth Avenue Dental Arts as soon as possible. We prioritize dental emergencies and do our best to see you on the same-day whenever possible.

In a dental emergency, call your dentist immediately and follow the dentist’s instructions. Then, you can reduce the pain and prevent additional damage with just a few simple first aid steps. Here’s what to do if you have the following symptoms:
  • Swelling: Use a cold compress on the affected area.
  • Pain: Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as ibuprofen or apply clove oil topically for quick relief.
  • Bleeding: Apply gentle pressure to the wound using a bit of sterile gauze.
  • Lost Restorations:  Denture adhesive or temporary cement from the pharmacy can temporarily hold a crown or bridge in place.
  • Knocked out tooth: Rinse your mouth and the tooth gently and do not damage any tissue that is still attached to the root. Place your tooth back in the socket or in a container of milk and bring it to our office.

When you have a dental emergency on the weekend, call an emergency dentist immediately. Many dentists have an emergency number that allows you to leave a message during the weekend or after-hours. The emergency dental care team will return your call as soon as possible. If you are bleeding excessively, do not wait for your dentist to call you back, go to an urgent care center or your nearest emergency room.

Yes, many dental insurances cover emergency dental care. Your deductible, annual maximum and co-pay for most PPOs is the same as standard dental care.

Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the last 4 of your 32 teeth that grow at the back of the mouth. Some encounter impacted wisdom teeth that do not have enough room to grow normally or it cannot erupt properly in the mouth. It may be necessary to pull your impacted wisdom teeth because it can grow at an angle toward the neighboring teeth, not erupt at all or partially erupt. If impacted wisdom teeth are left untreated it can lead to severe pain, gum disease, poor position, crowding, tooth decay, infection or other dental problems.

The signs and symptoms of impacted teeth are:

  • Pain in Teeth Surrounding the Wisdom Tooth
  • Headaches
  • Pain in the Neck or Back of Mouth
  • Gums Are Bleeding and Swollen
  • Tender Gums

As with other dental emergencies, if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, call your dentist so we can see you as soon as possible.
